Estimates for this section run from 10.5 to 19 miles. It’s a magical section and it sure FEELS like it’s a good 15 miles long. It took us 7 solid hours of walking around 2-2.5 MPH to finish it-from Bulls Gap to Trammel. So I stick with 15 miles in the retelling.
It’s a beautiful section, one or two well established campsites and dozens of perfect spots to hang a hammock. The trail is lined with quartz, the winter views are spectacular, sometimes with vistas off in both directions as you walk along the ridge.
Give yourself plenty of time to do this one!
Short road walk to an old com tower.
This section is often described as a roller coaster because of the many ups and downs. There is one long climb up at the com tower and a long drop down afterward. Keep an eye out for switchbacks.
This is a great long day hike or a short overnighter. Parking is at gravel lots on both ends.
